Buttermilk Cinnamon French Toast

One of my favorite breakfast foods has got to be French toast. There’s something about the crispy exterior and the creamy, custardy interior that makes a humble slice of bread extraordinary. In this recipe, the tangy buttermilk is complemented by sugar, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon for a twist on the classic.

  • Yields: 4 Servings

1 1/3 cup cup buttermilk

4 eggs

3 tbsp sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp salt

3 tbsp butter (for frying; use nonstick cooking spray instead if desired)

8-10 slices bread (we used sourdough but any kind of white or wheat bread would do)

1In a large baking dish, whisk the buttermilk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well blended. Add the bread and allow to soak for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally.

2In a large skillet, melt 1 tbsp butter over medium heat.

3Cook the toast until browned and slightly crispy on the outside, about 2-4 minutes per side.

4Cook the rest of the toast in batches, melting more butter as necessary.

5Serve with maple syrup.
